When the skin comes in contact with an irritant in poison ivy, an allergic rash develops. 

What are the symptoms of poison ivy rash?

Symptoms include intense itching, skin swelling, blisters, and skin redness. Although applying calamine and Burrow’s solution may help relieve itching, mild rashes will need prescription-strength steroid cream and more severe rashes will need oral steroids.

How to Treat and Prevent Poison Ivy Rashes:

  • Wearing protective clothing, including long sleeves and pants while working in areas where toxic plants may be found.
  • Wear heavy-duty vinyl gloves while doing yard work or gardening.
  • Barrier creams like Ivy Block may help prevent rash.
